Well the good news is I found my camera...the bad news is I actually left school without it today. Ahhh….I hate when I am in a rush and I forget stuff. I really wanted to post this fun freebie though before it was too late, so here it goes. I love, love, love the book, Roses are Pink, Your Feet Really Stink. This is a really cute book and my kids LOVE it. If you don’t own it, it’s a must have for your classroom.
Prior to the lesson I have a big red heart cut out of construction paper. As I am reading I have the kids listen for a time when someone in the book is being a bad friend. When they hear it, they yell stop and tell me what it was that showed bad character. For every bad action in the book we make a fold in the heart. When the book is over the heart is almost nonexistent.
After the book is over we talk about things we can do to be good friends. I usually list these on chart paper to hang up in class. Every idea the kids come up with for being a good friend I unfold part of the heart. By the time the whole lesson is done I have a whole heart again. We discuss how the heart still has wrinkles and sometimes we have to gain our friendship and trust back before our hearts are nice and pretty again. This makes a HUGE impact on the kiddos. I hang the poster of student responses and the wrinkled heart up in the room. It makes a good display, plus the kids do remember it!
Below is a cute classbook freebie I made. I decided to have my kiddos write about how they can be a good friend to others in our class. I am planning on doing this lesson on Thursday during our classroom meeting time. Hopefully you can use this in your room. Happy Valentines Day!
Character displays should be posted later this week along with my Sweet for Synonyms mini unit!
